So first and foremost, you want to have fun with it. Overthinking can take the joy out of cooking and consuming the final product. We all have different taste pallets. One could say that there is no correct pairings for that reason Alone. A big part of pairing foods with wine is learning by taste and preference. You will discover good balance over time through trial and error. With that being said, lets dig into the basics and keep things simple.
Finding pairings online is easy, but with some basic knowledge— you can make your own pairings using your all time favorites! Here is a short checklist:
- Wine should be sweeter and more acidic than the food
- White wine pair best with low intensity meat (chicken/fish)
- Red wine will pair best with bold meat (red meat/steak)
- Fatty food pair with bitter wine
- Try to pair the wine with dishes sauce
BREAKING THE RULES —Wine can be tricky when you follow the books. Most people say Red wine with cheese—But red wine will overpower most cheese types IMO. Too much information can complicate things and sometimes be intimidating. Rules are meant to be broken! And in the end, a fine wine of any type has never ruined a dish. The goal of pairing food with wine is to create balance between the two. This is done by matching the main components of dish to the main components of the wine. A good result of this will have all your senses tingling. Expanding your knowledge of wine by tasting more flavors can really inspire new amazing ideas.
You can get caught up in the do’s and dont’s but what’s the fun in that? Beauty is in the eye of the beholder—Right?
